On 4 november 1966, the worst floods in recorded history in Venice, with tides of 194 centimeters above mean sea level. UNESCO Director-General Renè Maheu launched an appeal to the world to help restore the countless damaged artworks and buildings. Since then, 53 private committees have carried out nearly 2,000 restoration projects thanks to the funds raised in their countries.
