History of the Committee

The German Centre for Venetian Studies was opened in 1972 at Palazzo Barbarigo della Terrazza on the Grand Canal.
The Centro is a private association financed by the State German Minister for Culture and Media and supported by German foundations for science and art.

It is an institution for interdisciplinary studies, which promotes research in the field of cultural studies and artistic work on the history and culture of Venice and its former dominions.

The public programme includes international conferences, lectures, concerts, exhibitions and other cultural events. Once a year the Centro organises an interdisciplinary study week.
The library is opened upon request and offers over 40,000 books on Venetian matters to scholars.
