History of the Committee
The Swedish committee Pro Venezia was founded in 1974 on the initiative of a group of Swedish persons among them the Swedish ambassador to Italy.
We have during the last 40 years, for an amount of 100.000 €, taken part in a number of projects in Venice. The facade of Ateneo Veneto, the Oratorio dei Crociferi, and a music room in Ospedaletto. An important project was one of the antique lions outside the Arsenale. On the biggest lion an inscription of old Swedish runic letters were found. The restauration of this lion was financed by Pro Venezia.
Another project was an economic contribution to get back a painting by Vasari to Venice.
Current projects
One of our last projects was to give support to the Swedish language teaching at Ca’ Foscari. The last is a contribution to Bursary Misericordia.
Future projects
To be discussed with Comitati Privati in the autumn 2021.
What can be and is the role of our Committee within the Association?
Our hope is to be able to continue our cooperation with I Comitati Privati and to continue to give financial support to various projects suggested by I Comitati Privati.
What does working in Venice mean for our Committee?
For the Swedish committee it is of great importance to be able to take part in the international cooperation to save the cultural heritage and values of Venice. During the last years we have also discussed in which way we could give any help to make Venice to survive as a real city, una vera città.
